The Grey Lady in the Mist

We keep on our Eastern track by flying via the New York skyline again and then past JFK to Nantucket.  The Skyline this morning was even more amazing, we reached it by flying over Harlem past the Giants Stadium and down the east River.  This was possible due to the great instructions we received from Tommy.  After the skyline we dropped down to below 500 ft to fly east towards Nantucket and passed JFK.

Nantucket is called the Grey Lady due to the amount of fog it suffers from, but today we are kinda of lucky with a clear day.  Well we thought it was clear, we could see the airport from 10 miles out but there was a very thin layer of cloud over the airport at 600 ft making it IFR.  we requested a SVFR approach, but were denied.  We decided to sit it out and landed in a field just outside their zone near red barn road.

On the ground we called the tower asking them why they refused our SVFR request, they explained that they had too much IFR traffic but would get us in if we took off again.

Back at the airport, safely on the ground we were first met by Betsy.  After Betsy however we were approached by Trooper Bret, he wanted our details and he was considering a citation for landing off the airfield.  Betsy tries to talk the Trooper around , but just seems to making things worse and is told to butt out by the Trooper.  All ends well however when the Trooper says that it is unlikely that a citation will be issued and ends up having a selfie with us.

After much talk Betsey finally take us to our hotel, an old quaint house in Center Street called the Anchor inn were each room is named after a whaling captain.  Dinner is with members of the Nantucket Flying Association with whom we were introduced to.  This was all embarrassing since we were asked to sign autographs for the kids on a coloring book featuring ourselves and the helicopter.
