Islands, Churches and Markets

Today I get to walk around around Granada alone, first port of call is the Cathedral of course!  The present structure was completed in 1972 but a church has existed on the site since 1525.  As Cathedrals go it is not St Peters and will not get a big write up from me.  It was worth a visit, but not anything special.  So off to look around the town.

Walking around town I stumble upon a market, a warren of alley ways and stores.  I ventured deep into the market, the only European there.  It was hectic, it was busy, the paths were narrow.  All and sundry was being sold, fish , meat, vegetables and rices.  The blood from the meat was dripping on to the floor, the local dogs were making the most of it.  How so  much meat gets sold in one day beggars belief, surely most goes to waste!  I cannot be kept, it is not refrigerated.

On exiting the market I spy another church, this church looks older than the Cathedral., Iglesia La Merced.  Indeed the present structure is, being completed in 1862.  The main attraction of this church is the view from the bell tower over the city.  The stairs up are narrow but the view is indeed impressive.  You are not allowed to but you could even ring the bells if you so desired.

In the afternoon we meet up with Rene and are taken a fabulous boat trip around the small islands near Granada on Lago Cocibolica.  Rene seems particularly keen to show us his new project which is a boutique hotel island, which is due to open in six plus months.  Indeed it should be quite spectacular and private only being 6 rooms.  To purchase an average islands here would cost around $300,000, not bad really.

The afternoon was a pleasure the highlight I guess being the sighting of Spider Monkeys on one of the Islands.  After our little tour we treat Rene to a late lunch and a local restaurant, before retiring.

To complete our day Peter and I visit Volcano Masaya in the early evening.  This is the best time to go as this is when you get to see the full glory of the lava pool.  Awesome!

The evening is quite with a quick visit back to the Irish Bar!
